Metzora, Vayikra 14:21. Ve'im Dal Hu. סימנים and The Korban Oleh Ve'Yoreid: Torah Mnemonics.

The Korban of a Metzora is an unusual type of korban called Oleh Veyoreid, a Variable Korban.
This week's parsha describes the korban a Metzora must bring to complete his process of purification. This korban is one of the small group of korbanos that provide the penitent with a range of options according to his ability to pay. This class of Korbanos is called "Oleh Ve'Yoreid," "rising and falling," and are found in only five situations. These disparate underlying obligations, and the particular korbanos brought in each case, vary widely; sometimes there are three levels, sometimes two. And don't be misled by the name "Oleh." The name has nothing to do with Korban Olah-- they involve Chatas and Minchah at least as much as Olah.

How on Earth can a person remember when you bring an Oleh Veyoreid? With a Mnemonic, or, an Abbreviation.
When I was learning Maseches Shavu'os, I found it helpful to develop an acronym as a mnemonic to help me remember the cases where a Korban Oleh Ve'yoreid is brought.

Mnemonics we know and love.
Many of us remember the acronym we used to memorize the names of the Great Lakes from west to east- HOMES; Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior, or Sohcahtoa for algebra. Students of anatomy remember the three layers of the krum shel mo'ach with DAP-- Dura, Arachnoid, and Pia Maters. The US military famously abbreviates everything, and the Gemara is full of acronyms: The word 'Shas' is itself an acronym. In the Seder on Pesach, every child remembers the order of the Makkos because of the Siman. The Tosfos Yomtov in Mishnayos loves to do this as well, and calendar calculation handbooks are infested with them. I thought it would be interesting to list the ones I am aware of and have found useful. As I accumulate more, I will update this post.

Please don't ask me to post things like Chabad, or Yaavetz, or Rambam or Rashba. The words I have serve to remind of of the things they abbreviate, whereas nobody cares how the Rashba was called up for an aliyah-- his name, for us, is the Rashba. And I know about Moshe Ve'Kalev, which defines when the Elokim or the Shem Adnus has a vowel under the first Aleph (Mei'Elokim, but Veilokim). I just find that kind of stuff stultifying. (Stultifying: a subject whose students, due to acute tedium or chronic boredom, tend to drool and/or snore.)
anguage searchers, yaknehaz, yad shachat dam, askelav gudu. Seven Mitvos bnei Noach

Test yourself!
The first line of each Siman has the Siman and what it refers to. The next lines explain what the Siman means.
Here's a suggestion: print this out, read the Siman but cover the explanation, and see if you can remember, or figure out, what the letters of the siman mean. Some are childishly simple. Some are decidedly not. Some are new and were invented by this writer.

If the Tosfos in Eiruvin I quote below applies to you, as it does to me, you might find the simanim very helpful.

The reason for the pictures is because the Hagada illustrator in the first one, Southern Germany, late 1400s, intended the picture of the Rabbit Hunt as a visual pun: in German, hunting a rabbit is Yagen den Haz, or Yagen Haz, or Yaknehaz. Why the second guy, mid-14th Century Catalonia, put it by Dayeinu I have no idea. He probably saw it in an earlier Hagada and didn't get the joke, and thought that 'rabbit hunts' had some deep connection to the Seder. I suppose the equivalent now would be to show a container of

I didn't want to put too much into the post, and I was afraid to mess up the direction the hebrew and english go, so I'll note some things here:
1. In 5 and 6, I use two names for the same thing. Eidus means Shvu'as Ha'eidus, and Shmi'as Kol also means Shvu'as Ha'eidus. If you're a better Scrabble player, try to do better. Also, Bitui means Shvu'as Bitui.
2. In 7, Mapcom, I point out that the mutual obligations of a married couple begin with the same letter. Except for Kevura and Kesuva. So sue me.
3. Numbers 5, 6 and 7 are mine and nobody else's, to the best of my knowledge, but we've been doing this for a looong time, so I realize I might not be the first.
4. In number 15, the dinim of Kos Shel Bracha, the word Chamisha stands for four things, not five. But if you want to complain, talk to the Baal Haturim who came up with it.

1. BeGeD KeFeS

2. SHATNeZ GaTZ

Right, I didn't even think about the ones from dikduk and safrus. There's also KaLeV uMoSHe, for remembering when you put a vowel in the first letter of the Sheim Hashem. Keilokim, but Mei'elokim.

I remember my sixth grade rebbe in Lakewood Cheder teaching us #14. What is its source?

Eliezer Eisenberg said...

I don't know what the source is, it's just something we all hear somewhere along the line.

What I find really frustrating is I've never heard anything at all for the monetary system. It's like a bob and tuppence to me. That would be useful!

Imagine that. A week before Pesach and I didn't remember to put in Yaknehaz. I put it in now, along with pictures. Thanks.

Ok, I'll add Shatnez Gatz, since its a halacha lemoshe misinai and me'akeiv in ksav by a Get according to the Mordechain in Gittin, but I really want to avoid anything dikduky.

how about Pardes - Pshat, Remez, Drush & Sod

Eliezer Eisenberg said...

Well, if I add Pardes, then I'll have to start adding things like "Kruvetz", those poem things some people add to birkas krias shema on Yomim Tovim. The Beis Yosef in OC 68 says that Kruvetz stands for Kol Rina Viyeshu'a Be'oholei
Tzadikim.

Come to think of it, why not? I just have to get to a typewriter with hebrew word processing.

I cut and pasted this comment from where lesser unknown wrote it. And I'm putting his suggestions in, except for the dikduk one. I don't like dikduk, neither in language nor in life.

more acronyms for an older post:
1) sifrei EMES (aleph, mem, saf) for the 3 seforim of tanach (Iyov, Mishlei, and Tehillim) that have their own set of trup
2) If i remember correctly, the beginning of each sefer of chumash has an acronym for a mitzvah. for example, breishis stands for bechor rechem emo shloshim yom tifdeh. and shemos stands for shnayim mikreh v'echad targum. I dont know what the other 3 stand for...
3) (a dikduk one) the letters yahu are the 4 letters (yud, heh, vav, aleph) that don't have an invisible shva nach when they end a word, and therefore the first letter of the word following them does not get a dagesh kal, if it is one of the letters of beged capos (which someone else mentioned)
4) if we are making up our own, (i dont think i heard these, just threw them together now) yesh shem for the niviyim rishonim, kra aish, for the 5 megillos
